Surviving a British Winter

In case, the bitterly cold temps haven't made it obvious, winter is here!  And while the thermometer may say 34°F, you may have noticed that it feels strangely colder.  Back home in the Northeast, I could get away with just wearing Under Armour Cold Gear under my jeans and sweater, slap on a coat and be very comfortable in 20°F cold.  Not so in the UK, as the cold here is quite damp and will cut right through you - Under Armour and all!  So how does one survive the cold temps here?  Here are a few tips:
  • Stay indoors if possible.  I know this sounds pretty obvious but honestly try to avoid the cold if possible.  This is a popular option as you'll probably notice that the city tends to be a bit dead in the winter.
  • Wear thermal underwear.  Sexy? Hell no!  Comfy?  Debatable.  Warm? Yes!
  • Hot water bottles. So even if you take my initial advice and stay indoors, you'll probably live somewhere that doesn't have central heating.  And while your radiator is keeping half of your room nice and toasty.  You may still be freezing even while wrapped tightly in your duvet or slanket as the case may be.  The solution: a hot water bottle!  You can get there from just about anywhere and they will keep you nice and warm even when your radiator doesn't!
  •  A flask of whiskey.  Or any other alcoholic beverage of choice.  It'll keep you warm and possibly help you deal with the chaotic Christmas season.
  • A pub with a fireplace.  In case, you're too classy to carry a flask.  It has the bonus of being able to indulge in warm winter favorites like a hot toddy or mulled red wine. Although this would mean leaving the house...
I'm sure I'm missing loads of other things from this list.  Any other suggestions?
